Here we visited the Red Pagoda which hugs the side of a 220mtr hill which they say resembles a jade seal. At the top is a temple built during the reign of Emperor Qianlong 1736-96. In 1819 they built the nine story pagoda to make getting to the temple easier and in 1956 they added three more stories with each floor dedicated to the famous generals of the three kingdoms. To get to the Red Pagoda you cross a suspension bridge that makes you feel as though you have been drinking heavily. The water level of the dam since 2009 now reaches the base of the yellow gate entrance in winter so the government built a dyke to protect it however the historic village was relocated further up the mountain. They demolished the old buildings to use the materials for the new homes.
After returning to the ship we started cruising again towards Fengdu. Myself, Noel and Jody took the Chinese 101 lesson to learn to speak perfect mandarin in one easy lesson. We can now say a few basic word like beer, red wine, I don't want it, hello, you welcome and count. The one we will remember is your welcome. (bu zie) say it quick.
This afternoon myself, Donna and Mark did the optional tour to the Fengdu Relocation Homestead Tour giving us an insight into the impact relocation has had on various aspects of everyday life on the Yangtze. We also visited a kindergarten and open air market.
The host family gave us a tour of their home and farm. The old farmer who is 76 showed us around his home and describe his life now which sounds fairly lonely now as he sons work away and his wife is looking away looking after the grandchildren. He now has this big house all to himself.
